If the giants of modern rock are a clique of bone-headed bullies, then Cake are the smart-ass hipsters goofing on them at the other end of the lunch hall. Cake twists funk, metal, country, disco, jazz, funk, mariachi and gospel riffs around lyrics that might make Capt. Beefheart proud. Cake is the living proof that perversity and non-conformism are hip. The band sounds quaintly like a-melodic “sub-Beck” – very strange, but it works! Their creative independence is sure to bring stern exuberance, if not serious enjoyment, to even the most discriminating and/or self-conscious audience.
