One of the most innovative vocalists of the punk era, Nina Hagen took the movement’s ugly aesthetic and applied it to her classically trained voice, to realize the full guttural potential of the German language. Hagen’s music is compelling because of its youthful intensity, but it is her lyrics and her remarkable voice that have the power to convert. She has built a reputation throughout the world as a punk superstar, yet as evidenced by her performance of a dramatic aria called “Naturträne,” can sing opera with might and dignity.
